Fire Safety Tips for Halloween

Halloween is a time for many fun experiences and delights, but it’s not for going to the emergency room or dealing with a fire. That’s why people across Chicago and the rest of the country need to focus on fire prevention to make the season happier, healthier and safer.

Below are some of our favorite tips on fire safety for Halloween. Don’t be scared to use them all!

1. Consider Using Electric Candles in Jack-o-Lanterns

Yes, you want to have a jack-o-lantern that looks like the one you remember as a kid, but we all know how quickly fires can happen. Consider buying an electric candle instead, which will give you the benefit of the candle not blowing out in heavier winds.

If you do choose to use actual candles, be sure the flame is completely protected from ghosts, goblins and other trick-or-treaters. As they get close to your doorway, are they at risk of catching fire? Keep any lanterns away from fingers, toes and curious ghouls in search of candy.

2. Choose Costumes That Don’t Have Dangling Parts

It’s easy for a kid to love a costume that’s involved and has tons of loose fabric, such as a “flapper” costume with fringe. The problem is that these parts can easily land right in a candlelit jack-o-lantern before the child realizes what happened.

Besides, it’s just better to have a costume that’s easy to move in and less of a tripping hazard while you’re out and about in the neighborhood seeking chocolate and other sugary goodies.

3. Do Not Use Candles in Costumes

This goes for both adults and kiddos. Candles should never be part of costumes, nor should open flames. Even if you come up with the “best” idea for an outfit, think twice if it involves fire. It’s just not worth the risk.

4. Watch Electrical Cords

Remember the days when a pumpkin was the only decoration for Halloween? Those are long gone! Now, many homeowners string their properties with festive lights, inflatables and other electricity-run items.

If you’re going all-out this Halloween, protect yourself and everyone else by using extension cords that are only meant for the outside, not for inside use. Plus, keep them neatly wrapped and away from the trick-or-treaters and their parents.

5. Pets  Remember Pets During Halloween

Cats and dogs can get spooked by ringing doorbells, strangers coming by and constant sounds. Keep them locked in a secure place where they are comfortable and can’t knock over candles or jack-o-lanterns. They’ll feel better and less stressed, and you’ll know that everyone is safe.

Make Parties Fun and Fireproof

Having a party for kids, adults or just everyone? Keep those tips in mind. From candles to electric wiring, think two steps ahead so no one is exposed to hazards.

Everyone loves the atmosphere of Halloween, and you should make this year the best one ever. Just put a few fire prevention tips into place, and you’ll be on your way to having a ghoulishly good time!
